Removable Prostheses

Replacement for one or more teeth

Partial or full removable prostheses, also known as dentures, can replace one or more teeth, as a temporary or permanent solution. The advantage of the removable prosthesis is the cleanability, a disadvantage is their comfort. Removable dentures require habituation of the patient in terms of chewing and speaking.

Total Prosthesis in Acrylic Resin

This is the simplest form of denture, made entirely of acrylic resin. Although the palate is completely covered, an acrylic resin prosthesis in the upper jaw is often fairly well tolerated thanks to an acceptable grip and support. This is less evident in the lower jaw. An advantage of an acrylic resin prosthesis is that it is quite easy to extend when more teeth are lost.

Frame Prosthesis (Metallic Re-inforced Prosthesis)

This is a click denture on your own teeth, partly in metal and partly in acrylic resin. A prerequisite for a click denture on teeth is that there are still healthy teeth present in the mouth. By anchoring the prosthesis to your own teeth, it is often more secure, so that less palate has to be covered, there is less loss of taste, and more comfort. A frame prosthesis is generally more tolerated and requires less habituation from the patient.

Overdenture

If there are no more teeth, and a full acrylic resin prosthesis that only rests on the gums does not offer sufficient comfort, a prosthesis based on implants can offer a solution. We call such a prosthesis an overdenture or click denture (on implants). Such dentures have more or less the comfort of fixed teeth, with the great advantage that it is easy to clean and repair if necessary.

Cleaning your Prosthesis

It is best to keep removable prostheses clean with green soap (dreft) and a brush. Do not use toothpaste, the abrasive effect can damage the prosthesis. If the prosthesis is visibly contaminated, it is best to soak it in cleaning vinegar overnight.
